How and Why Toyota continues being world's largest car seller despite massive US media attacks on it?

Despite heavy hammering by US media for its recalls, Toyota remained largest auto-seller in the world for 2010. And despite billions of bailout and lot of heavy media praise GM/Chrsyler still fall short of Toyota. How Toyota managed to go unscathed even after lot of heavy US media hammering?
